Looks like UK has their man.....John Calipari. Sources say he's close to signing a deal worth eight years and around $35 million....which would make him the highest paid coach in college basketball. I've also read that it could be even more than that.
WLEX-TV in Lexington reports that Calipari has agreed to the deal....according to the story, at least two members of Calipari's top-rated recruiting class for next season, who have verbally committed to Memphis but have not signed letters of intent, may also follow him to Kentucky. They are 6-10 forward DeMarcus Cousins, and point guard John Wall, who has not verbally committed to Memphis but is considered likely to sign with Calipari.
*******************************
Is Calipari the right guy for UK?

Given the past performance, Dr. Todd, you'll forgive me for being skeptical that the background check UK will run on John Calipari will actually ask the questions that need to be raised.

Are you concerned with Chad Johnson's absence at the voluntary workouts? On the surface I would say probably not. But remember last year when he said he planned on being at all the workouts....be committed to the Bengals...and to work hard day in and day out? Guess he's changed his mind. With Carson trying to get back into the groove after missing basically all of last year...and Chad coming off of a poor season numbers-wise....wouldn't you think that he would want to be there if he was committed?
And did you catch what Carson said last night on SportsTalk with P-Doc? Long story short, Carson reached out to Chad a couple times in the offseason and hasn't heard from him. Sounds like a fun few months ahead....yay. At least Carson's elbow is better...

You're bracket has got to be busted now right?? Those of you that know me know that I have several brackets ready to roll...but once you get to the Final Four, there can't be very many variations. Unfortunately, most of my solid brackets had either Louisville, Memphis, and/or Pitt in the Final Four. Looks like I'm not gonna be making too much money this year.

You concerned about Bronson Arroyo after getting roughed up for 10 runs (only 3 ER) on 14 hits with 2 BB yesterday? He's allowed 26 hits in 19 IP with 5 HR allowed. Now in spring, stats can be a deceiving....but he certainly didn't have the command you'd like to see the last 2 times out.

Quickly on the Billy G situation.....part of coaching at UK (or any big time, well-established program) is your ability to connect with the fans/boosters/alumni. Billy just wasn't that guy. As far as a replacement goes, I'd be really nervous to see Mitch Barnhart attempt to fill the spot quickly and without tons of thought, considering that's how they got into the Gillispie mess in the first place.
Pitino weighs in on the UK job....
Looks like Calipari could be interested in Kentucky after all....or just looking for more money from Memphis....

If you’re not winning 90 percent of your games, you better be kissing babies and playing golf with the local bank presidents. BREAKING NEWS....Billy Gillispie out as coach at Kentucky...A news conference to announce the decision is set for 4:30pm today.
- Now THAT was a good game. Although Xavier fell to Pitt, 60-55...what was amazing to watch was both teams' inability to sink a bucket for the majority of the 2nd half. But even Xavier fans can admit that Levance Fields was clutch....what a huge 3 pointer in the final seconds!! From a Xavier standpoint, I was very frustrated that they couldn't seem to cash in on the multiple chances they had under the basket in the final frame.

Health a concern for the Reds
John Fay - Enquirer
Jerry Hairston Jr. and Brandon Phillips returned to the lineup Thursday for the Reds. But Alex Gonzalez and Edwin Encarnacion were still out. Hairston and Phillips were coming back from bouts with the flu. It’s pretty easy to put a timetable on that. It isn’t with injuries like Encarnacion (shoulder) and Gonzalez (hamstring) have. “We’ll be whole soon,” Baker said. “You want to start the season healthy. That’s one of the real keys.”

- Xavier vs. Pitt tonight.....who wins?? (Answer the poll to the right). Both teams got a pretty good wake up call against their 2nd round opponents....but I think the Panthers have a talent and physical edge. I hope I'm wrong.
- No big surprise, but Sean Miller says Pitt is the toughest opponent they've played all season.....
<blockquote>"For us, I think where it really starts and stops is to be physical ourselves, to not allow them to dominate the glass. I don’t think they nearly get enough credit for being a great offensive team. Their transition – they get dunks and easy baskets that break your backs,” Miller said in Wednesday’s press conference. “We have to be rock solid in our transition defense and rebounding, two things that we’ve been very good at this season. And for us to have a hope, I believe, of advancing or beating them at the end of the game, you’d have to see us do a great job in those two areas.”</blockquote>
- Although Pitt (30-4) has advanced to the Sweet 16 in five of the last eight seasons, it hasn’t been to the Elite Eight since 1974 – when the NCAA Tournament field was only 32 teams.
- Would you still consider Xavier a mid-major school? It's a hard question to answer....because everyone seems to have a different definition of what makes up a "mid-major." I guess I look at it like this....are you a school that can pull big-time recruits on a regular basis? Check. Are you a school that has a consistent track record of winning and deep tournament runs? Check. Are you a school that seems to implement the "next man up" philosophy? Check. Do you have a coach that has invested in your program's future with a long-term deal? Check. I'd say a mid-major tag is unfair to the Muskies.
Xavier belies tag of "mid-major"
Sporting News
Xavier should have outgrown the stigma of being a "mid-major" team with its success in NCAA tournaments. Right, coach Sean Miller? "How would you define that?" he asked. Good question. With the impressive NCAA tournament showings by Xavier, Memphis and Gonzaga this decade -- all still in the tournament from non-BCS conferences -- "mid-major" is hardly synonymous with early elimination.
Can Xavier win it all?
P-Doc
Where is the bar now, Xavier? The expectations are in flux, chugging upward with every new March. Should a place with 4,100 undergrads – a private place with rigorous academic intent that doesn’t cut its jocks inordinate slack – be in the same rare air with the big boys? How big? How often? I asked Bob Knight and Jay Bilas, who would know: Can Xavier ever win a national championship? Knight said why not, Bilas said probably not. Heart leans toward The General. Head strongly favors Bilas.

Speaking of the NFL....the owners approve 6 more rule changes....
As each day goes by...I get more and more excited about the Reds pitching staff. Johnny Cueto had his best outing of the spring yesterday: 6 innings, 2 hits, no walks, five strikeouts. He faced the minimum 18 hits because of two double plays. He threw 69 pitches, 48 strikeouts. And by some people's estimation, he's the #3 starter. If Aaron Harang can return to 2007 form, this pitching staff could be really, really fun to watch.
****************************
Apparently Marvin is pissed that Stacy Andrews left the Bengals.....“I was surprised because he led us to believe differently,” Lewis said of Andrews, according to Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I was disappointed because Stacy led us to believe that he wanted to stay [in Cincinnati], so it was up to his representative to get a contract done. We felt like we had a deal done and then, all of a sudden, he walked away and that disappointed me.”

- You have to be impressed with Xavier's 2nd half against Wisconsin yesterday. Their defense was just tremendous....holding the Badgers to 25 percent shooting in the second half of a 60-49 victory. In a year that was expected to be a "rebuilding" one, Sean Miller's guys stayed composed during the back-and-forth 1st half. Another problem-spot early in the year was their inconsistency at the free-throw line. Not a problem yesterday. The Muskies made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. It's their second straight Sweet 16 appearance, fourth overall. They'll play Pitt in Boston at 7:27pm on Thursday night. Sean Miller will get to coach against his Alma Mater....should be fun.
- Pitt and Louisville each gave me a big scare....whether or not the close games were signs of trouble ahead or a good wake-up call for both, I'm gonna be plenty nervous for my brackets heading into Thursday. Bottom line, if Pitt plays like they did early in yesterday's game against Xavier....the Muskies could easily be headed to the Elite 8.
- Although I didn't have UD in the Sweet 16....you had to be pulling for them against Kansas. But they just couldn't seem to make any shots when they needed it and got badly out-rebounded. Chris Wright had 10 points on 4-for-16 shooting for Dayton, which went a pitiful 22.2 percent for the game. Charles Little was 2-for-10, and Marcus Johnson went 1-for-11.

The best invention you'll see today.....It is the ultimate beer-lover’s fantasy: a bottle of brew with a woman on the label whose bikini disappears as fast as the drinker can consume its contents.
