Statement by NFL spokesman Greg Aiello on Cedric Benson:
Cedric Benson met last week (July 22) with Commissioner Goodell and members of his staff at the league office in New York to review a recent incident in Austin, Texas. Benson was reminded of his responsibility to take precautions to avoid putting himself at risk when he is in public. He also was informed that based on our current understanding of the facts, no disciplinary action is planned. "Cedric expressed to us his understanding that NFL players have a special responsibility to meet high standards of conduct," Commissioner Goodell said. "Like most public figures, Cedric and other NFL players occasionally may find themselves facing risks that other individuals do not. They must exercise good judgment and restraint when confronted with those risks. Cedric said he recognizes this and has committed to working hard to make better decisions and avoid any further incidents. We support him and expect him to be successful in meeting this commitment."

Bengals training camp postcard: Peter King, SI
4. Lewis is not happy with Andre Smith, the second-year tackle from Alabama. He does''t think Alabama shot him straight with its pre-draft info (the kid's work ethic leaves a lot to be desired) and Smith was not diligent enough in the offseason rehabbing a foot injury. The Bengals expect him to be ready for the start of the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if: 1. The Bengals start him on the PUP list because he won't be in good shape; or 2. He doesn't start the season as a starter.

Bengals news
The Bengals today signed unrestricted free agent Terrell Owens, one of the most productive wide receivers in NFL history. Also today, the club waived WR Freddie Brown, a first-year NFL player from Utah.
In Owens--14 previous NFL seasons---with San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia and Buffalo---he has career accomplishments that include:
* 14,951 receiving yards, third in NFL history
*144 touchdown receptions, third in NFL history
* 1006 receptions, sixth all-time
*Six Pro Bowl selections and six All-Pro selections.
"The addition of Terrell brings another accomplished and productive player to our offensive team," said head coach Marvin Lewis. "When you add his kind of threat to your passing game, it helps your running game, too, because defenses have to account for it. We've witnessed it as a defense playing against him. We've been through the process of trying to prevent it.
"We have visited extensively with Terrell through the offseason," Lewis added. "We feel good about his goals and our team goals having the opportunity to match up."
Owens (6-3, 224; Tennessee-Chattanooga) started every game for Buffalo last season and led the Bills in receptions (55), receiving yards (829) and yards-per-catch (15.1). He came to Buffalo as an unrestricted free agent for 2009, after spending the 2006-08 seasons with Dallas.
He has played 189 NFL games with 174 starts, and he has missed only nine career games due to injuries. He also has played and started in 12 postseason games, including Super Bowl XXXIX for Philadelphia (2004 season), and he has 54 postseason receptions for 751 yards and five TDs.

Xavier news
CINCINNATI---The Xavier University men's basketball program has added 6-8,
200-pound forward Travis Taylor to the roster. Taylor, who was a star at
Monmouth University the past two seasons, will sit out this season due to NCAA
transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility left beginning with the
2011-12 season. Xavier head coach Chris Mack confirmed today that Xavier has
received all of the necessary paperwork to make it official and that Taylor will
be on the Xavier campus in August.
Taylor led Monmouth in scoring at 17.8 ppg. and in rebounding at 7.6 rpg. as a
sophomore this past season, while shooting 54.2 percent from the field. He
posted a pair of 30-point games in the 2009-10 season versus Sacred Heart and
Wagner. Taylor earned a spot on the 2008-09 Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team
after averaging 12.4 ppg. and 5.8 rpg. as a freshman. Prior to enrolling at
Monmouth, he earned All-State honors at Union High School in Union, N.J.
Mack is eager to get Taylor on campus. "I am excited to announce that Travis
Taylor will be joining our program this fall,"said Mack. "Travis has been a
highly productive forward at Monmouth for two years, awfully impressive
considering he started playing organized basketball as a junior at Union High
School. I expect Travis to be an immediate contributor like many of our transfer
students in the past. He's versatile, can score around the basket and has a
great feel for the game despite his limited playing career. Certainly, his best
days are ahead of him. He's a very good student, comes from a close knit family
and we're looking forward to Travis being an integral part of our basketball
family over the next three years."

As for Carson Palmer, I think the potential loss of Bryant is big, because again, he was hopefully going to be able to scare safeties into playing far back. I think Owens is a shadow of himself, and won't really make Palmer that much better. I'm skeptical of the quarterback's remaining arm strength, and I think the Bengals will be a run-first team. Everythings stop at night as people gather on the beach to watch the sunset. There are a couple of parks with playgrounds for kids. The Bengals today signed CB Brandon Ghee of Wake Forest, one of two Cincinnati third-round selections in the 2010 draft. Ghee (pronounced "JE"”) was the 96th overall selection.
Ghee (6-0, 190) was a three-year starter for Wake Forest teams that reached two bowl games. He rated as one of the fastest and most athletic cornerbacks of the 2009 college crop and had a 4.39 clocking in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
"We're excited to work with a player who has the kind of tools Brandon brings us," said Bengals secondary coach Kevin Coyle. "When you look at the whole picture-- his speed and size, good hands and feet-- it's pretty impressive."
Ghee is the fifth of Cincinnati's 2010 draft selections to sign. Also signed are DT Geno Atkins of Georgia (fourth round), G Otis Hudson of Eastern Illinois (fifth round), WR Dezmon Briscoe of Kansas (sixth round) and C Reggie Stephens of Iowa State (seventh round).
